- Tactile stickers can be placed on appliances to enable a person to feel where the 350 degree setting may be on the oven or where the permanent press setting may be on the clothes dryer. Marking of appliances can also be helpful on telephones and remote controls.
- We have over 60 closed circuit televisions (CCTVs) in circulation at this time. Individuals who cannot afford this expensive but highly demanded electronic magnification device are able to borrow a desktop CCTV to use as long as they are able. CCTVs magnify text and images to assist with maximizing individuals' use of their functional vision.
- Information is available on blindness prevention, eye safety, eye conditions and much more. We maintain a large inventory of adaptive aids and retail catalogs listing products helpful to individuals with vision loss.
- The program that led to the establishment of the Lighthouse in 1935 continues to be a vital part of our services. The Lighthouse provides employment to individuals with vision loss in an 80,000 square foot facility that produces a variety of products for sale to federal, state, and commercial customers.
- We can visit an individual with vision loss in their own home to make adaptations that may help increase independence with daily living tasks. Learning a new technique or approach to successfully accomplish everyday tasks independently is an important aspect of adjusting to vision loss.
- Telephone based assessments are available to explore how an individual’s vision loss is affecting daily living activities such as meal preparation, medication management, literacy, socialization, etc. Through the assistance of certified language translation and interpretation services, we are able to conduct telephone based independent living assessments in over 170 different languages.

- With a database of over 1,475 different organizations, we are able to match individuals to appropriate supportive services and assist with the navigation of various agencies so that an individual can easily access and utilize available services. We are committed to providing meaningful advocacy and liaison services to individuals with vision loss and their families.
- The Lighthouse for the Blind can provide an in home demonstration of magnification equipment and assess what level of magnification would be appropriate to accommodate an individual’s specific level of vision loss. The Lighthouse for the Blind can provide resources where such equipment may be obtained locally.
- We partner with the leaders in the industry to provide mobility solutions for individuals with vision loss. We maintain an inventory of canes, tips, and accessories available for purchase.
- Immersion training is provided to new employees in the Lighthouse Industrial Division to assist in the acquisition of job skills necessary for a successful vocational outcome. Potential accommodations include nonvisual instruction, self paced work, seated positions, guide dog breaks, and other accommodations specific to the dynamic needs of our workforce.
- We provide training in the skills necessary to travel safely and independently using a mobility cane, guide dog, or other navigation aids. This training includes instruction which enables the traveler to know where they are, learn where they wish to go, and plan on how to independently get there safely.
- We provide information and support to individuals with vision loss that seek vocational opportunities with community employers. This includes access to resources that may provide help with job coaching or adaptive equipment needed to insure a successful vocational placement.
- We can help with the application for many different services including Social Security Disability benefits, MITS (Mobility Impaired Transportation Service) Paratransit, Disabled Bus ID, Disabled Parking Placards, Meals on Wheels, Texas State Library Talking Book Program, Blind Fishing License Exemptions, National Federation of the Blind Newsline Audio Newspaper Reading Service, North Texas Radio for the Blind, Housing, Public Benefit Programs, Directory Assistance Exemption, Guardianship Services, and numerous other federal, state, and local programs which may be of benefit to individuals contending with loss of vision.
- We are able to assist individuals with learning to use the latest technology in adaptive equipment. Whether the interest is in a computer magnification utility or a screen reading program for the blind, we are able to provide demonstration versions, an overview of key commands, and local area resources for additional technology training.
- We provide a practical and comprehensive vocational assessment of individuals with vision loss. A short term placement in the Lighthouse Industrial Division provides feedback on vocational potential to include productivity, interaction with others, ability to carry out instructions, and functional limitations that might impact future vocational planning.
