The industrial operations of the Lighthouse for the Blind includes seven major production departments, Box, Paper/Copy Paper, Energy Pad, Bottling, Pen/Award Products, Specialty Items and Subcontracts. The production areas are supervised by four sighted supervisors. The Warehouse is supervised by one sighted supervisor.
The direct labor for each production area is comprised of 100% legally blind workers. The average number of workers employed in each area averages approximately 10 to 12 individuals. The total blind employment is currently 70.
The Box department produces foam-cushioned shipping boxes that are primarily used by the military for shipping delicate instruments and repair parts. This department supplies General Services Administration distribution depots as well as Department of Defense distribution centers located around the U.S. The Box department has been a mainstay for employment and revenue since 1986. It has been estimated that the Lighthouse has produced in excess of 12,000,000 boxes without a single quality issue.
The warehouse is the action center, heart, and soul of the Industrial Division. This 38,000 square foot facility brings in raw materials and ships finished goods at a rate of approximately 10-12 trucks per day. There are currently three visually impaired workers and two sighted forklift drivers that perform these tasks. (When our monthly sales averages approximately $2,000,000, there is a lot of activity.)
The total industrial operations at the Lighthouse are a source of pride for the 70 blind individuals and their supervisors. Many lives are enhanced in our community because of the opportunity for meaningful employment made available by the efforts of our dedicated staff, companies, corporations, and individuals in Fort Worth who have supported and continue to support our agency.
